Petroleum Engineering for Non-Technical Professionals

MARCH 24, 2025

It can be hard to interact productively with a technical industry without a good grasp on its technical foundations.  This course offers a survey of the most important scientific and technical aspects of the oil and gas industry led by independent industry experts from inside and outside the state.
The course will be formatted as a combination of videos produced by Top Energy Training, live lectures, and extensive Q&A from a panel of independent experts.  Including continental breakfast and hot lunch, the course is still offered at a price accessible to government and other non-profit entities.

Format

  • 8:00 am -  Continental breakfast available through morning break

Instructors and Panelists:

Three major universities collaborated to create Top Energy Training for the express purpose of training  the staff of energy regulators across the country.  Expertly produced materials are taught mostly by academic staff, and other webinar materials are taught by recognized industry experts. This course will present videos and other materials curated and excerpted from Top’s library to meet the needs of the audience in California. The following panelists will present a few topics and will lead Q&A of the topics.

Dwayne Purvis
Principal Advisor
Purvis Energy Advisors

Dwayne is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas with 30 years of experience as a reservoir engineering consultant to operators, investors, governments, NGOs, and litigants.  He has designed and taught training classes for professional societies, training companies, and for graduate students in business at Texas Christian University.

Curtis Shuck
Chairman of The Board
Well Done Foundation

Curtis founded and leads the first and most important national non-profit dedicated to plugging of orphan wells, the Well Done Foundation.  He has spent the last five years crisscrossing the country to plug orphan wells, racking up a uniquely deep and broad expertise in the operational issues of these wells.

In addition, we are recruiting a select few other technical professionals with deep experience in the state to participate in answering questions about the application of the principles to the particulars of California.

Syllabus:

Approximately one hour each

  • Geology – where and at what pressure oil, gas, fresh water and brine exist, properties of the rocks relevant to plugging, (tentatively) review of core samples from local reservoirs
  • Drilling and well construction – principles of design and construction for well integrity
  • Operations and Workovers – nature of operations, repairs, and other changes to a wellbore
  • Production and Injection – what causes fluids to move in the subsurface, how it is measured and managed
  • Well integrity – what can compromise integrity and how to measure it, how to read well records
  • Plugging – modes of leaking, driving forces, design criteria to prevent leaks and critical restoration
  • Resources (5 minutes) – where and how to find additional information
