Markus is the Technical Director for Energy Systems Optimization at the Department of Energy (DOE)’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). He has over a decade of experience in developing and deploying decision-support solutions for energy systems. Markus is an engineer by training, having earned a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, both from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. He also holds a Ph.D. in Process Systems Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining NETL, Markus was with EQT Corporation, where he was responsible for establishing an in-house Optimization Engineering team. AT NETL, Markus launched and is currently leading two major energy systems optimization programs, including DOE’s Produced Water Optimization Initiative, “Project PARETO”, and the development of NETL’s well plugging optimizer, “PRIMO”.
